The New Eden-Paradise

New Eden-The garden of restoration

We have traveled through the garden of sin, the garden of suffering, the garden of victory, and now we come to the final garden which is called Paradise or the New Eden.

This garden is more difficult to write about. The other three gardens have already existed, we have a reference for them in the Bible. This garden is a garden of the future. No one has been in this garden, and we have only a few scriptures that we can look at to give us an indication of what we will experience in this final garden.

Let’s explore what the Word of God does have to say about this final garden:

The Revelation

We will begin in 2 Peter 3:13, “But according to his promise we are waiting for a new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.”

Looking back to our last discussion on Golgotha, we know that Jesus defeated death, hell, and the grave, but that the story is not finished. It is not finished until Jesus’ second return.

Therefore, we are all still waiting for the new heaven and the new earth that Jesus will establish. Until that time, we must still contend with our enemy, the ruler of this natural world.

The Ruler of the Natural World

The devil prowls like a roaring lion

There are several places in the Bible that let us know that the devil has been given some dominion to rule in this natural world of earth. Let’s look at the book of Job. In Job 1:7 we are told, “The Lord said to Satan, ‘From where have you come?’ Satan answered the Lord and said, ‘From going to and fro on the earth and from walking up and down it.” We see a similar sentiment in 1 Peter 5:8, “Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” In John 12:31, Jesus referred to Satan as “the prince of this world”.

We get a picture in our mind of the earth being the devil’s playground. His is walking and prowling the earth looking to lie, kill, and destroy anyone he can. However, his authority is limited. Jesus rose from the dead. He ascended into Heaven and is seated at the right hand of God. Jesus has complete authority over the heavens and the earth. The cross weakened Satan’s hold on the earth, but it did not annihilate him…that will come soon. Jesus will complete his final redemptive work when he returns again!

The End of Satan’s Reign

We are given an indication of how Satan’s reign will end in the book of Revelation. In Revelation 19:20 we are told, “And the beast was seized, and with him the false prophet who performed the signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshipped his image; these two were thrown alive into the lake of fire which burns with brimstone.”

According to Revelation, Satan will remain there for 1000 years and then he will be released from this prison. Satan will make one more attempt to win the battle, but he will be defeated. There will be a second death for Satan and his followers and they will be permanently thrown into the lake of fire.

New Heaven and New Earth

We are then told that the first heaven and the first earth will pass away and a new heaven and a new earth will be established. The holy city, a new Jerusalem will come down from heaven, from God and it will be made ready for the bride (the church). It is here that Jesus exclaims, “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.”

This is our New Eden or Paradise.

As believers, we have so much to look forward to! The spirit and the bride say “Come”.

The Tree of Life

I want us to come full circle. If we look back at the Garden of Eden, we know that God had planted a tree of life. Genesis 2:9 says, “The tree of life was in the midst of the garden.” We also know from our first lesson that this tree of life is being guarded by the cherub with the flaming sword to ensure that no human can reach it.

Once the devil is finally defeated, and the New Eden has been established, Revelation tells us, “He who has an ear, let him hear what the spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.” (2:7). Revelation 2:2 tells us that, “also on either side of the river in Paradise is the tree of life with its 12 kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month.

The work that Jesus did on the cross makes us more than conquerors if we remain in Christ. God will allow his people to have access to the tree of life once again.

Restoration will be complete. “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.” (Rev 21:6). “He who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be my son.

He IS Coming

What I love about this garden is that it is not something to look back on historically, it is something we look forward to with great anticipation. This garden is the future for those who call themselves sons and daughters of the most high God. Jesus is coming quickly. “My reward is with Me, to render to every man according to what he has done. Blessed are those who wash their robes so that they may have the right to the tree of life and may enter by the gates into the city.” (21:13-14)

The division between God and man that was caused by the betrayal of Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden, will be restored.

The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all, Amen.
